From HE to FE
Teaching in FE with an HE teaching qualification
The implementation of the Further Education Teachers’ Qualifications Regulations (England) 2007 has an impact on higher education lecturers working in or wishing to work in the regulated further education sector.
Professional Standing in Further Education
In 2006, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) launched the Professional Standards Framework (PSF) which set out minimum standards for the professional development of HE lecturers.
If you gained your teaching qualification at an HEA accredited institution delivering its initial teacher training programme to the PSF, then your qualification relates fully to Part 1 of the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS): http://tariff.svuk.eu/search/browse/?keywords=HEA+2006&submit=Search. This will give you associate membership of the Institute for Learning. (You will be required to obtain evidence from your awarding institution to show their HEA accreditation at the date of your award.)
Professional Status in Further Education
The route to Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) is already available to associate members of the Institute for Learning.
For those HE lecturers holding an HEA accredited ITT qualification and required, either by the 2007 Regulations or by the terms of their employment contract, to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, it has been acknowledged that undertaking formal training to complete the DTLLS may not be appropriate.
IfL will be introducing a professional recognition scheme based on current practice and experience of the individual teacher to help them gain QTLS. It is envisaged the scheme will be lauched in Spring 2012. Details will be available on the main IfL website.
Meeting the terms of the 2007 Regulations
If you are or will be delivering only higher education provision in a further education setting, you are exempt from the terms of the 2007 Regulations*.
If you are or will be delivering a mix of higher and further education provision, then you are required to meet the terms of the 2007 Regulations*.
