Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is my qualification not on the Tariff of Qualifications (ITT)?

A: You may not be able to find your qualification on the Tariff because:

1. In many instances, the Tariff is established by mapping classes of qualifications i.e. qualifications that cover generic standards such as the FENTO standards or NVQs in Learning and Development to the units of assessment in the New Overarching Professional Standards for Teachers, Tutors and Trainers.  The title of the qualification shown on the Tariff is the generic title for that qualification (which may be included in the title of the individual qualification) but there is no reference to individual awarding institutions.  For example, the Further Education Teachers’ Certificate (FETC) was awarded by a number of awarding bodies and carried particular brand names such as the City and Guilds 7407.  Try using popular key words or pharases in your search.

If you wish to seek further clarification, check the title on the certificate from your awarding body. To contact the awarding body for your qualification go to the National Qualifications Database or contact the LLUK Information and Advisory Service

2. We are continually scoping qualifications to be considered for inclusion on the Tariff of Qualifications (ITT) and currently a Tariff may not yet have been established for your qualification.

3. We may not have been able to source the detailed course specifications for some qualifications selected for the mapping process for inclusion in the Tariff. To date these are:

  • ENB (998) Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice

4. There are qualifications that have been considered for inclusion in the Tariff of Qualifications (ITT) and did not recieve any Tariff. To date these are:

  • CIEH Professional Trainer Certificate
  • NVQ L5 Learning and Development
  • NVQ L4 Management of Learning and Development
  • ENTO mini awards: Certificate in Coaching/Mentoring in the Workplace
  • ISTD Foundation in Dance Instruction
  • Trinity Guildhall Drama and Speece Licentiate Diploma
  • YMCAfit Personal Trainer Award

If your qualification is not on the lists or on the database  or you can provide the required specifications please e-mail the Tariff team at: tariff@svuk.eu

Q: I have the A1 assessor award; does this map to any of the units of the new teaching qualifications?

A: Many practitioners across all the further education environments hold the Learning and Development Unit: A1 Assess Candidates Using a Range of Methods.  This unit has been mapped and awarded full coverage of the CTLLS unit: Preparing and Planning for Assessment (PPA).  For further information, navigate to the A1 assessor award page.

Q: What do I do if there is no Tariff for my qualification?

A: If you are seeking a Tariff for entry to a CTLLS or DTLLS programme of study, contact your course provider as they may be prepared to accredit your prior experience or learning (APEL). Alternatively contact LLUK Information and Advisory Service

If you are seeking a Tariff to establish your level of membership that may be awarded by the Institute for Learning (IfL) contact the Institute for Learning

Q: There is only a Part Tariff for my qualification. What should I do next?

A: The Tariff of Qualifications (ITT) database contains details of what you need to do in order to move to a Full Tariff for your qualification. You should contact your provider organisation in order to ascertain if they would be prepared to accept this additional evidence and how it should be presented.

If you are working towards professional standing you should contact the Institute for Learning  to ascertain if you have sufficient qualifications to gain the necessary level of membership for your teaching role i.e. associate or full.

Q: What is the difference between endorsed and approved qualifications and non endorsed and approved qualifications?

A: An endorsed qualification is one that has been endorsed by Standards Verification UK (or prior to 2005 FENTO).  Endorsement is in relation to the new professional standards published last year, and prior to this in relation to the FENTO standards and ensures qualifications meet the 2001 or 2007 regulations for teaching and training in the further education/learning and skills/post compulsory sector.

In the past, an “approved” qualification was one approved in relation to the FENTO subject specifications for teachers of literacy, numeracy and ESOL.  Since September 2007 the distinction between “endorsed” and “approved” has been removed because both generic ITT qualifications and those subject specific qualifications for teachers of Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL are covered by the same regulations.  All these qualifications are now subject to endorsement by SVUK.

Q: How do I know if my qualification was an endorsed or approved qualification?

A: If you go to the relevant qualification on the Tariff of Qualifications (ITT) webpage there is a link to all current and legacy higher education institution and awarding body endorsed and approved teaching qualifications.

You can check on the status of your endorsed or approved qualification
