There are also the Learning and Development National Occupational Standards - Lifelong Learning UK has produced standards for the professional development of staff delivering training in the workplace; they are used in all four nations to underpin workplace training qualifications. These standards are about to be reviewed and revised.

Is a specific teaching qualification required to teach in the lifelong learning sector?

Three new teaching qualifications were introduced by the 2007 FE regulations for teachers in further education in England:
 - Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Award - an initial award at Level 3 or 4.  This must be gained where appropriate as soon as possible when beginning teaching but at least within 1 year of employment in the sector.
 - Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) at Levels 3 or 4
 - Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) at Level 5

Are there specific requirements for teaching adult literacy and numeracy?

In some countries, practitioners are required to achieve additional qualifications or experience in order to teach adult literacy or numeracy

New teachers of adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL must hold a teaching qualification appropriate to the Full Teaching role together with the appropriate subject specialist qualification and gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills within five years of employment.

The requirements of the 2007 FE regulations apply to teachers of Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL: a) registration with the Institute for Learning,

b) Continuous Professional Development of at least 30 hours. 

Qualifications to teach adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL can be gained by the following routes:
Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy)/(Numeracy)/(ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector - fully integrated route or Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (English Literacy)/(English/ESOL)/(Mathematics Numeracy) - partly integrated route or level 5 Generic Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector + Additional Diploma in Literacy/NUmeracy/ESOL - additional and concurrent routes.

Are there statutory requirements to teach?

The 2007 Further Education Teachers' Qualifications (England) Regulations state the requirements for teachers, trainers and tutors delivering learning in the Further Education sector in England. All new staff employed as teachers, trainers, lecturers and instructors in the FE sector must be professionally registered and licensed to practice by the Institute for Learning. Existing staff are also required to be professionally registered and comply with the rules of registration.

Are teachers required to join a professional body?

In some countries this is a legal requirement; in others it is optional or advisory.

All teachers, trainers, lecturers and instructors  employed by learning organisations in receipt of Learning and Skills Council funding are obliged by the FE Regulations to register with the Institute for Learning and carry out continuous professional development (CPD) in accordance with their professional role. New entrants to the sector will be required to gain professional status within five years according to their role. For the full teaching role this is Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills.For the Associate Teaching Role = Associate Teacher Learning and Skills.Existing teachers of further education may elect to undergo professional formation and gain professional status.
